[2.] Etymology of “decide” (p. 60)
ReplyDelete[A] From the Latin decidere, meaning “to cut off,” philosophically, it reminds us that every decision involves sacrifice: choosing one thing means cutting off infinite other possibilities.
[Q] “As I make hundreds of small choices throughout the day, I’m building a life—but at one and the same time, I’m closing off the possibility of countless others, forever. (The original Latin word for “decide,” decidere, means “to cut off,” as in slicing away alternatives; it’s a close cousin of words like “homicide” and “suicide.”) Any finite life—even the best one you could possibly imagine—is therefore a matter of ceaselessly waving goodbye to possibility.”
[6] Costica Bradatan on perfectionism (p. 79)
[A] Bradatan described perfectionism as a fear of confronting finitude. A perfectionist would rather keep an ideal fantasy than face reality’s limits and imperfections.
[Q] “He might have been a genius, but he was also a perfectionist… Better to cherish an ideal fantasy than to resign himself to reality, with all its limitations and unpredictability.”
[11] Viktor Frankl and despair (p. 93)
[A] Victor Frankl overcame despair in Auschwitz by maintaining autonomy over his inner life, choosing to see life as meaningful even amid suffering.
[Q] “Viktor Frankl, author of Man’s Search for Meaning, who was able to fend off despair as a prisoner in Auschwitz because he retained the ability to direct a portion of his attention toward the only domain the camp guards couldn’t violate: his inner life, which he was then able to conduct with a measure of autonomy, resisting the outer pressures that threatened to reduce him to the status of an animal.”
