As I get older and older, I realize more and more how important it is to not be comfortable. It's really a strange concept because we all want to feel comfortable, and comfort isn't a bad thing. To me, comfort is a sign of feeling safe and secure. On the other hand, security isn't always a good thing. I'm not exactly an old dude, but I know that in my younger years, I was trapped in my security. I never made friends after high school and I kept ramming my head into the same things over and over again. Although I felt secure and comfortable, I wouldn't consider those times to have been happy for me. Once I recognized this though, I started to make attempts to branch out. Since then, I've made a mostly brand new friend group, forged a new career path, and in general have diverted heavily from the path that I was originally on - the path of security. Of course, that doesn't mean that I need to change everything every 5 years just to make myself uncomfortable. It's just important that I continue to push myself to try new things and step out of my comfort zone. Weirdly enough, through this blogpost, I think I've realized that one of my pools of fulfillment is challenging myself to step out of my comfort zone. It's what led me to try karaoke, try to become a counselor, and try new mediums of entertainment in these recent years (shoutout to Metroidvanias). This was a bit of a ramble, but in conclusion here, I'm saying I agree with Arthur Brooks. It is a good idea to try to meet new people, try new things, and generally get out of your comfort zone.
