Philosophical Approaches to Anxiety Presentation Summary: Karlie Stroud

For my presentation I will be discussing the philosophical approaches to anxiety. I will be mainly focusing on the examples used in our reading How to Live by Sarah Bakewell, specifically chapter 6, Tips and Tricks. I will touch on each of the individual approaches as well as briefly touching on a few modern practices that have emerge from these approaches and theories. I found this topic extremely interesting, and I thought it would be pretty relatable for most.

Discussion Questions:

1.)    Do you think using the “reminiscing” approach would work for you?

2.)    Do you think there is one philosophical approach that could best alleviate anxiety for you, or do you think we have advanced to better methods?

  2. I’ve found myself using a lot of tips and tricks to get through my life. I see them as kind of band-aids, but sometimes that’s all you need. I think their most important use lies in habituation. Simply doing something over and over again can make it easier to manage, whether it’s to decrease anxiety levels or simply better your life in some other way. Excited to see what you have to say.

  3. I love these questions that you ask. I believe philosophy, psychology, theology, etc. go hand and hand with the attempt to reduce anxiety. Any approach, though, stems from the questions we ask in philosophy, but I believe they don’t have to end there.
